The Local Government Division has officially removed Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy, popularly known as 'Grenade Babu,' from his post as Chairman of Kishoreganj Union Parishad in Nilphamari, following proven allegations of illegally occupying government Khas land, constructing unauthorized structures, abusing authority, and embezzling union council funds for personal gain.

The punitive action was announced on September 15 via an official gazette notification signed by Md. Abdur Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the UP-1 Branch under the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

According to the notification, formal investigations substantiated multiple corruption and land-grabbing charges against Chairman Grenade Babu, notably echoing earlier investigative reports highlighting how he usurped Khas land worth approximately BDT 12 crore. Though he was served a show-cause notice granting an opportunity for self-defense, his written response was deemed unsatisfactory by the ministry. The government concluded that allowing him to continue exercising union council powers was administratively untenable.

Consequently, invoking sections 34(4)(b), 34(4)(d), and 34(6) of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act, 2009, the ministry dismissed Grenade Babu from his mayoral office in the public interest, with immediate effect. Furthermore, Kishoreganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Arifur Rahman—who confirmed the development to reporters on Wednesday afternoon (September 16)—has been directed to take prompt steps for issuing a gazette notification declaring the chairman’s post legally vacant under sections 35(1) and 35(2) of the same act.
