In a devastating act of sabotage, unidentified miscreants poisoned a fish enclosure overnight in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah, shattering the self-reliance dreams of four unemployed youths and causing an estimated financial loss exceeding BDT 4.5 lakh.
The incident took place in Ramjaypur village under the upazila's 1 No. Tribeni union. According to local sources, the four young men had leased a large pond about 5-6 months ago for BDT 1 lakh to break the cycle of unemployment. After investing another BDT 3 lakh gathered through savings and loans, they stocked fingerlings of 7 to 8 varieties, including rui, catla, and silver carp. After months of tireless labor, the fish had finally grown to market size.
On Wednesday morning (September 16), upon receiving word from locals, the owners rushed to the pond to find thousands of fish floating dead, emitting a foul odor across the area. A crowd of villagers gathered at the banks, moved to tears by the tragic sight.
Through tears, the victims shared, "We started this project with immense hardship and heavy loans, hoping to repay our debts by selling the fish. Miscreants have destroyed our dreams in a single night. We are now utterly destitute and do not know how to clear this debt." Local residents have strongly condemned the brutality and demanded swift identification and punishment of the culprits. Confirming the incident, local union parishad members and police administration noted that inspections have been carried out, and strict legal action will follow upon receiving a formal written complaint.
