A massive disaster has occurred in the results of this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations across most colleges in Ishwardi, Pabna. Out of the eight colleges in the upazila, seven have recorded a pass rate of below 30 percent. Simultaneously, the number of students achieving GPA-5 has dropped significantly. Such a downward trend in college results has sparked disappointment among local students, guardians, and the conscious community. Relevant individuals attribute this disaster to negligence by educational institutions, student absenteeism in classrooms, and the private tutoring business practiced by a section of teachers.

Following the publication of HSC exam results on Saturday (October 31), inquiries at the Upazila Secondary Education Officer's office and various educational institutions revealed that none of the eight colleges in Ishwardi achieved satisfactory results. In most institutions, both the pass rate has plummeted and the number of GPA-5 achievers has fallen to an alarming level.

From Ishwardi Government College, 992 students participated in the exam this year. Among them, 604 passed and 388 failed, with a pass rate of 62.92 percent and 22 students achieving GPA-5.

At Ishwardi Mohila College, out of 422 examinees, 160 passed and 262 failed, resulting in a pass rate of 37.91 percent.

FromGovernment Sara Marwari Model School and College, 483 students participated, of whom only 134 passed while 349 failed, yielding a pass rate of just 27.74 percent, with a single student from the humanities department securing GPA-5.

At ’Pakshi College’, out of 44 examinees, 11 passed and 33 failed, giving a pass rate of 25 percent, with no students achieving GPA-5.

From Muladuli College, 133 students took part, with 22 passing and 111 failing, resulting in a dismal pass rate of 16.54 percent and zero GPA-5 achievers.

At Basherbada Degree College, out of 168 examinees, 31 passed and 137 failed, recording an 18.45 percent pass rate and no GPA-5s.

From **Dashuria Degree College, 325 students participated, 70 passed and 255 failed, with a pass rate of 21.54 percent and no GPA-5 achievers.

Meanwhile, at Salimpur Degree College, out of 54 examinees, 16 passed and 38 failed, giving a pass rate of 29.63 percent, with no one achieving GPA-5.

In addition, results for madrasahs and technical institutions are reportedly as disappointing as those of the colleges. This year, HSC and equivalent exams were held simultaneously across five centers in Ishwardi starting from July 2.

Some college teachers, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that a major reason for the poor HSC results is students failing to attend college regularly. Even when they come, many do not pay attention to classroom lessons, spending their time hanging out and using mobile phones. They believe good results are impossible unless student attendance in classrooms is ensured.

On the other hand, some guardians, wishing to remain anonymous, accused a section of teachers of lacking sufficient initiative to bring students back to regular classrooms. They alleged that some teachers prioritize private tutoring over teaching in classrooms, setting up private coaching setups near colleges and spending more time there. These factors are driving student alienation from classrooms and negatively impacting results.
