Locals and members of the Saghatta Landless Association staged a human chain and protest march at Saghatta Post Office intersection in Gaibandha on Thursday (September 17) to demand exemplary punishment for Montaz Ali alias Chengtu, the accused in a case involving the rape of a 4-year-old girl.
Following the human chain, a protest procession paraded through the main thoroughfares of Saghatta market, staged a brief sit-in in front of the Saghatta police station gate, and concluded at Paltan intersection.
The demonstration featured speeches by former reserved seat UP member Rahela Begum, retired Saghatta Pilot High School teacher Aminul Islam (Siddique Master), landless association leader Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, and the victim's father, alongside remarks from local residents. Several organizers and activists from the NGO 'Nijera Kori'—including Zillur Rahman, Rokeya Begum, Subrata Kumar, Avinash Chandra Roy, Ashtami Rani, Shyamali Das, Ruparna Mondal, and Shibnath Kumar Sarkar—expressed solidarity and joined the program.
Participants demanded a transparent investigation to bring the accused to justice and ensure strict punishment under the law.
The case stems from an incident on September 8 when Montaz Ali alias Chengtu (55) allegedly lured the 4-year-old child into his home under the pretext of giving her food in Hasilkandi village and violated her. A formal case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Saghatta Police Station on September 9.
