CHAPAI NAWABGANJ — The king of fruits is conquering new kingdoms. Mango exports have tripled to 6,000 tonnes this season, with Rajshahi's legendary Himsagar and Langra now gracing shelves in 22 countries from London to Riyadh.
The breakthrough came from three hot-water treatment plants that meet EU phytosanitary standards, plus direct cargo flights from Rajshahi airport. 'Earlier middlemen took everything. Now an exporter buys from my orchard gate at Tk 120 per kilo,' said farmer Abdus Salam, shading his eyes among 200 trees.
The agriculture ministry targets 15,000 tonnes next year, with new packing houses in Naogaon and Satkhira. 'One day, Himsagar will be as famous as Alphonso,' officials vow.
