KHULNA — Stripes are returning to the Sundarbans. The latest camera-trap census has counted 125 Royal Bengal Tigers — up from 114 — including 12 cubs photographed playing in the Talpatti and Katka ranges.
Forest officials credit a 60% drop in poaching after the surrender of 12 pirate gangs, 200km of new nylon fencing, and 'Tiger Response Teams' in 76 villages that have cut revenge killings to nearly zero.
'When I was a boy, the forest took a honey collector every season. Now the forest gives — tourists, honey, fish — because the tiger lives,' said Karim Sheikh of Shyamnagar, now a community patrol guide. The department will add 500 more camera traps and a dedicated wildlife hospital at Karamjal.
