Police have arrested seven individuals in Osmaninagar, Sylhet, on charges of preparing for a torch procession organized by the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). A case has been filed against 27 named individuals under the Anti-Terrorism Act, along with several other unidentified suspects.
The operation was conducted on Friday night around 10:30 PM by a police patrol team near the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Kashikapon Termile area under Dayamir union of the upazila. On Saturday, the seven arrested individuals were shown arrested under the case and sent to court.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off that leaders and activists of the banned organization were gathering to prepare for a torch procession in the Kashikapon Termile area, an Osmaninagar police team rushed to the scene. Sensing the police presence, several participants attempted to flee, but three were immediately detained from the spot. With the assistance of locals, four more individuals were subsequently captured.
In connection with the incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Muzzammel Hossain of Osmaninagar Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on Saturday (Case No. 8).
The arrested accused have been identified as Sabbir Ahmed Biplob (25), son of Kamrul Hasan Sagar from Tuker Bazar (Banagaon) under Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet city; Nahid Hasan (21), son of Abdul Hamid from Shekghat under Kotwali Police Station; Hridoy Pal (20), son of Suresh Pal from Paityapara (Shibbari) under South Surma Police Station; Sufian Ahmed (26), son of Ahmad Ali from Kazirgaon (Badaghat) under Jalalabad Police Station; Ruhel Ayman (25), son of Abed Ali from Jawakapan village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj; Ramzan Hossain (26), son of Mizan Mia from Ashurail village under Nasirnagar Police Station in Brahmanbaria; and Tofazzol Hossain (25), son of Junab Ali from Shibganj Majumdarpara area in Sylhet city.
Osmaninagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa stated that police conducted the drive upon receiving intelligence regarding the banned organization's preparation for a torch procession. A case under the Anti-Terrorism Act has been registered, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused named in the case.
