State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief and hospital management committee president Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain—also the Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-3 (Gauripur)—personally inspected the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning (September 16, 2026) at 11:00 AM following a recent fire incident.
Arriving on-site after the emergency, the State Minister participated in a special review meeting held at the administrative office. The meeting was also attended by hospital management committee vice-president and Mymensingh-4 (Sadar) MP Abu Wahab Akand Wahid, who confirmed to the media that while no deaths occurred due to stampedes during the chaos, two people died from fire-induced panic and illness.
Under the State Minister's directives, the prior 5-member probe committee was reconstituted and strengthened, with strict orders to submit a detailed report identifying the exact cause of the fire and the extent of damages at the earliest. Alongside the investigation, the State Minister and local administration demanded an explanation from hospital authorities as to why 4 out of 5 main stairwells in the multi-story building were kept locked. Furthermore, engineers were instructed to promptly draft renovation plans to better manage patient overcrowding. The State Minister also urged journalists to maintain objectivity in their news reporting.
