According to police and local sources, a dispute had been ongoing between two factions regarding the lease of the Pushpapara Hat (market). Last Thursday (October 29) at around 6:45 PM, the current leaseholder of the market, Abdus Salam Haji, and his nephew Ripon were having snacks at their office adjacent to the market. At that moment, several masked assailants belonging to the rival group arrived, opened indiscriminate gunfire upon them, and fled the scene. Although locals rushed them to the Pabna General Hospital for emergency treatment, they could not be saved.
The deceased victims are Abdus Salam Haji (55)—convener of the banned Pabna Sadar Upazila Sramik League and market leaseholder—and his nephew Ripon Hossain (50), President of Ataikula Union Sramik Dal. Abdus Salam was the son of the late Araj Ali Bepari from the Dharmagram area, while Ripon was the son of the late Omed Ali from the same locality.
