A ninth-grade student named Hamza Hawlader is currently undergoing treatment at the Khulna Medical College Hospital after being severely hacked with sharp weapons when he attempted to save his elder brother, expatriate Jibon Hawlader, from a gang demanding Tk 300,000 in extortion in Pirojpur Sadar upazila.
The incident took place in Pergola village under Kadamtala union of Pirojpur Sadar. According to the victim's family, local miscreants had been demanding three lakh takas from Jibon Hawlader ever since he returned home from Saudi Arabia, threatening and intimidating him when he refused to pay.
Family members stated that on the evening of September 8, while a family gathering was underway at their home, a group led by Al-Amin Sardar called Jibon out to the front road. When he again refused to meet their extortion demands, they physically assaulted him. Hearing screams that his brother was being beaten, ninth-grader Hamza rushed to the scene.
According to the family's allegations, when Hamza tried to intervene and stop the assault, Al-Amin Sardar and Sohel Sheikh struck him on the head with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured and unconscious on the ground. Locals rescued him and rushed him to the Pirojpur District Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the Khulna Medical College Hospital on September 9 for advanced medical care, where he remains hospitalized.
Speaking from his hospital bed, injured student Hamza Hawlader said, "Hearing that my brother was being beaten, I rushed to the spot and tried to stop them. That is when I was struck on the head. After the blow, I fell to the ground and was later taken to the hospital." The family expressed deep concern over their ongoing safety following the attack.
Farzana Akhter, Hamza's sister-in-law, has lodged a written complaint at the Pirojpur Sadar Police Station accusing Al-Amin Sardar, Sohel Sheikh, Bellal Sardar, Joni Khan, Mehedi, and three to four unnamed individuals. The statements of the accused could not be reached immediately.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shariful Islam confirmed that a written complaint has been received and stated that legal action will be taken following a thorough investigation.
