At least seven Houthi fighters, including a top commander, were killed during intense clashes with government forces in the strategic area near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the southwestern part of Yemen.
The information was officially confirmed by the Yemeni government on Saturday (September 19), as reported by the Anadolu Agency.
Yemeni Deputy Minister of Information, Abdulbasit Al-Qaedi, shared a message on the social media platform X, stating that the bloody clash took place on the strategically important Kahboub front. Houthi military commander Firak Mohsin Al-Asar and six of his associates lost their lives in the encounter.
No official statement has been released by Houthi authorities regarding the incident immediately. However, activists and supporters affiliated with the group confirmed the death of their top military leader on social media and expressed condolences, though they did not provide detailed information on when or under what exact circumstances he died.
The Kahboub area is mountainous, offering a clear view of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Fierce fighting has been ongoing for the past few days between government forces and Houthi rebels for control over this route, which is highly sensitive for international maritime navigation.
Civil war has gripped Yemen since 2014 when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sana'a, and other regions. Although the conflict had experienced relative lulls at times, it has recently escalated sharply.
