5 Dhaka Metro Stations Suspended as Mirpur RMG Protests Turn Violent: Police Box and Vehicle Torched
Dhaka Metro Rail stations closed to commuters following violent street clashes and arson under Mirpur-11 station.

Train operations across five key Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT Line-6) stations—Shewrapara, Kazipara, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, and Pallabi—were suspended on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following intense violent clashes between protesting garment workers and police forces across Mirpur.

Demonstrating for a ৳30,000 minimum monthly salary for the third consecutive day, thousands of garment workers occupied the strategic Mirpur-10 intersection starting early morning, severing traffic movement towards Mirpur-14, Mirpur-11, and Pallabi. As police launched dispersal operations around noon using tear gas, sound grenades, and water cannons, violent confrontations erupted. Demonstrators threw brickbats at law enforcement, set fire to a police box, and torched a police pickup van stationed under the Mirpur-11 metro station. Fire Service personnel attempting to extinguish the blazes were also attacked by agitators, prompting MRT Police Inspector Md. Mohsin Sheikh to confirm the immediate suspension of passenger operations at all five stations from 12:00 PM for public safety.

The rapid escalation occurred despite a key policy breakthrough announced at 11:30 AM by Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury. The Minister officially announced the constitution of a 6-member Minimum Wage Board, chaired by Senior District Judge Sheikh Ashfakur Rahman, tasked with publishing a revised wage structure for garment workers in the shortest possible timeframe. Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury appealed to all garment workers to end street blockades and immediately return to work, assuring that their core demand is being actively addressed by the statutory board.
