Under the revised rules published by the EC Secretariat on Wednesday (September 23, 2026), security deposits for chairman candidates have been increased to BDT 25,000, while general member candidates must deposit BDT 5,000. Candidates failing to secure at least 15% of the total cast votes will forfeit their deposits. Campaign expenditure ceilings have been raised to BDT 10 lakh for chairman candidates and BDT 2 lakh for general member candidates, with all electoral transactions over BDT 20,000 required to pass through a designated bank account. Nominations now mandate affidavits detailing domestic and foreign assets owned by candidates and their dependents, alongside recent tax return receipts. To curb electoral misconduct, intimidation carries penalties up to two years' imprisonment and BDT 10,000 in fines, while severe infractions allow direct cancellation of candidacies. Notably, ties will no longer be resolved by lottery; instead, fresh re-elections will be held in tied centers. Furthermore, visually impaired or physically challenged voters may bring an assistant aged 21 or older to aid voting, subject to presiding officer approval.
