Four members of the same family from Srimuddi village in Cumilla's Homna upazila went missing after a trawler capsized due to a storm in the Meghna River in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, while en route to a wedding ceremony. Additionally, the body of a woman named Rayesha Begum (55) was recovered following the accident.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon near the Aman Cement Factory in the Sonamoyie area under Baidrerbazar union in Sonargaon. According to locals and police sources, a group had set off in a trawler from Srimuddi village in Homna toward Haria Baidyapara in Sonargaon to attend a relative's wedding. The trawler was carrying wedding gifts, two cows, and a goat alongside the passengers.
Upon reaching the Sonamoyie area, the trawler was suddenly caught in a storm and sank in the Meghna River. Following the accident, a nearby trawler rushed to the scene and rescued several passengers, while fire service divers, naval police, and local police launched a rescue operation to locate the missing individuals.
The four missing members of the same family are Helal Uddin, his son Sajib, daughter Samia, and younger son Samin. Searches are currently underway in the Meghna River to locate them.
Meanwhile, Rayesha Begum, who was rescued and taken to Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex, was declared dead by the on-duty doctor. Her home is reportedly in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria.
Although fire service and police personnel were active in the rescue efforts, operations were hampered due to strong currents and falling darkness. The rescue team stated that searches for the missing individuals are ongoing and operations will resume according to the situation.
The news of the tragic accident has cast a shadow of grief over Srimuddi village in Homna, with family members and local residents waiting anxiously by the riverbank hoping for the safe recovery of the missing relatives.
