French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet stated on Tuesday (September 22) that Bangladesh will never have to choose sides between global powers like Washington, Beijing, or Brussels to maintain its diplomatic standing.
Speaking at a 'DCAB Talk' organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club in Dhaka, the French envoy emphasized that France does not view international relations through the lens of opposing blocs, such as "West versus East" or "North versus Global South." Citing France's own history of maintaining strategic autonomy within NATO and the European Union, he noted that sovereign nations must retain independent decision-making capabilities. Ambassador Séré-Charlet added that France remains ready to expand defense and strategic cooperation with the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force while respecting national sovereignty, in line with the principles outlined in the 2023 Bangladesh-France Joint Statement.
