President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir praised the textile industry's contribution to employment and foreign exchange earnings while assuring a 22-member delegation from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) of support to address current challenges facing the sector.
During a courtesy meeting at Bangabhaban on Monday (September 21), led by BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell, the President emphasized the need for pragmatic, integrated policy support similar to competing nations to sustain the local textile industry. Highlighting that gas and fuel shortages remain major hurdles—exacerbated by global conflicts—he reaffirmed the government's ongoing efforts to ensure long-term energy security and rebuild key economic sectors.
BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell briefed the President on current operational challenges and urged the retention of National Board of Revenue (NBR) measures, specifically withdrawing bond facilities on the import of 10-30 count cotton yarn and maintaining bank guarantees for yarn imports to safeguard domestic textile mills. Senior officials and secretaries to the President were present during the call.
