President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday urged the Bangladesh Coast Guard to take stronger measures to maintain law and order in coastal areas and effectively combat drug smuggling and human trafficking.
He made the call when Bangladesh Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral Md. Moinul Hassan paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban, as stated by the President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam.
The President also instructed the Coast Guard to intensify efforts to conserve fisheries and natural resources, protect the environment, and prevent water pollution.
He emphasized that the government is fully committed to developing the Coast Guard into a modern and efficient force capable of safeguarding the country's vast coastal areas and maritime boundaries. "To this end, the government is working to modernize the force and ensure appropriate training for its members," Fakhrul said.
He further urged the maritime force to remain vigilant against illegal fishing within the nation's territorial waters.
During the meeting, the Coast Guard Director General briefed the President on the force's ongoing activities and progress, including the procurement of new patrol boats and modern rescue helicopters, alongside the establishment of an aviation wing to enhance operational capabilities.
He also sought the President's cooperation in efficiently discharging his duties, while President Fakhrul assured him of all-out support for the force's overall development.
