The ongoing garment worker demonstrations in Dhaka’s Mirpur escalated sharply on Sunday, November 1, 2026, as protesting workers set fire to a police vehicle at Mirpur-11 during violent clashes over their demand for a ৳30,000 minimum monthly salary.
The protests began around 9:00 AM at the Mirpur-10 intersection before quickly spreading across Mirpur-11, 12, and the Proshika intersection, shutting down all vehicular movement across the commercial hub. As police forces stepped in to clear the blockades and restore public order, intense clashes broke out, with demonstrators throwing brickbats while police deployed water cannons, tear gas, and sound grenades. During the height of the confrontation, a group of protesters torched a police van stationed in the Mirpur-11 area.

The violent turn of events comes despite the Ministry of Labour and Employment announcing earlier today the official constitution of a six-member Minimum Wage Board, chaired by Senior District Judge Sheikh Ashfakur Rahman, to review and adjust garment worker wages. The arson incident follows Saturday's unrest, where garment workers vandalized commercial establishments and factories in Shah Ali and Kalshi.
