State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam has called for increasing women's participation in peace processes and decision-making, as well as ensuring accountability for acts of oppression against them. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she made this call on Wednesday local time in New York during the annual ministerial meeting of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Philippines, Italy, and UN Women to mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, emphasizing its implementation and accountability.
Recalling Bangladesh's support for the resolution as an elected member of the Security Council in 2000, Shama Obaid reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to ensuring meaningful participation of women in decisions affecting peace and security.
The State Minister urged countries to strengthen early warning and mediation efforts led by women, include more women in peace talks, and integrate the WPS agenda into climate and humanitarian actions. She also shared that Bangladesh is currently formulating its second WPS National Action Plan.
Highlighting the Bangladesh-led initiative "Dhaka Dialogue" to combat digital harassment and AI-driven abuse against women, Shama Obaid invited UN member states to join its upcoming "Group of Friends." Ministers and senior representatives from various countries attended the meeting.
