Speaker of the National Parliament Hafez Uddin Ahmed has urged Italian commercial enterprises to invest in extracting natural oil and gas reserves along Bangladesh's coastal belt.
The Speaker extended the invitation during a courtesy call paid by the Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Antonio Alessandro, at the Speaker's office on Sunday (September 20).
Highlighting bilateral efforts to address the ongoing national energy crisis, Speaker Hafez Uddin Ahmed emphasized joint cooperation in offshore oil and gas exploration and well drilling. He noted that Italy has remained a steadfast partner since granting recognition to Bangladesh in 1972, acknowledging Italy's host status for Bangladeshi migrants and its standing as a major export destination within the European Union for ready-made garments, leather, and ceramics.
Ambassador Antonio Alessandro reiterated Italy's support for Bangladesh's democratic path and expressed keen interest in expanding parliamentary diplomacy through parliamentary friendship groups and delegation exchanges. Discussions also covered defense procurement cooperation, machinery trade, and Italy's continued financial support for the Rohingya humanitarian response.
