A 35-year-old man named Mohammad Rashed passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after being struck with a wooden log while attempting to settle a dispute between a woman and her mother-in-law in Banshkhali, Chattogram.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Dhuillyajhiri area under Ward No. 5 of Banshkhali Municipality. According to police and local sources, the dispute erupted after Hosne Ara Begum disciplined her granddaughter with a cane, prompting her daughter-in-law, Jamila Akhtar (25), to confront her aggressively. Seeing the altercation escalate, neighbor Mohammad Rashed and several locals stepped in to protect the elderly woman and pacify the situation. During the melee, an enraged Jamila allegedly struck Rashed on the head with a heavy piece of wood, causing severe head trauma.
Locals rushed the injured youth first to Banshkhali Upadhyay Health Complex before transferring him to CMCH in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 6:00 AM on Wednesday (September 23, 2026). Police have arrested the accused housewife, Jamila Akhtar, wife of expatriate Mohammad Abdullah. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banshkhali Police Station Md. Robiul Haq confirmed the arrest, stating that the victim's body has been kept at the CMCH morgue for an autopsy, while legal proceedings and the filing of a murder case are underway.
