Clearlake Capital to Take Full Ownership of Chelsea in £950 Million Share Buyout
Clearlake Capital Group is set to assume complete ownership of Chelsea Football Club by acquiring the minority shares held by co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, marking the official exit of American billionaire Boehly from the club's board.
According to Reuters, the transaction to acquire the remaining equity stake—which comprises approximately one-quarter of the club's ownership—is valued at roughly £950 million. Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, another minority stakeholder in the consortium, is participating alongside Clearlake in the deal.
Clearlake Capital, co-founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, has held a majority stake in the Premier League club since May 2022. The latest buyout consolidates total operational and strategic control under Clearlake.
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed the leadership continuity:
"Clearlake's objective remains advancing the strategic path currently being pursued and realizing the ambitions established by the ownership group. There will be no changes to the club's day-to-day operations, leadership, or long-term strategy."
Background and Ownership Timeline
-
2022 Acquisition: The current ownership consortium originally acquired Chelsea FC from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in May 2022 in a deal valued at £4.25 billion.
-
Boehly's Leadership: Todd Boehly served as the public face and chairman of the club during the post-Abramovich transition phase, leading major squad restructurings and executive overhauls.
-
Consortium Acknowledgment: Expressing gratitude for Boehly's tenure, Eghbali and Feliciano noted that Boehly remained an important partner throughout his chairmanship and will always remain a recognized part of Chelsea's history.
