Government Adopts Strategic Policy Shift Toward Solar Power to Tackle Energy Crisis; Unveils 2026–2030 Renewable Energy Strategy
Solar energy expansion and metro transit developments highlighted during the executive press briefing in Dhaka.

The Government of Bangladesh has taken a policy decision to maximize reliance on solar power across short-, medium-, and long-term frameworks to address the ongoing national energy crisis. Prime Minister's Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman announced the strategic shift during a press briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, held alongside Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmad.

To attract private investment and institutionalize green energy adoption, the government has adopted the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026–2030. As part of rooftop solar expansion, a net-metering package has been launched under which the government will purchase surplus solar electricity from consumers at ৳10.50 per unit. Additionally, to encourage private sector participation without requiring capital expenditure from rooftop owners, the government is promoting a third-party Operational Expenditure (OPEX) installation model.

Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman also outlined major progress in urban mass transit and market governance. Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) signed contracts for four major construction packages under MRT Line-1 and MRT Line-5. Concurrently, 18 broad-gauge railway coaches arrived in Bangladesh as part of ongoing fleet modernization. On consumer governance, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted 993 nationwide monitoring drives in October, levying ৳1,77,28,500 in fines against market manipulators.
