State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, Mir Shahe Alam, announced that local government elections are unlikely to take place this year, as the Election Commission (EC) targets completing all local polls by June 6 next year.
Speaking to journalists during a briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday (September 23, 2026), the State Minister clarified that the Election Commission revised its timeline following inter-ministerial secretary-level consultations. The deferred schedule accommodates key national events, including public examinations and religious observances, as educational institutions serve as primary polling centers. The Ministry has allocated an estimated budget of BDT 6,000 crore to conduct elections across five tiers, with Union Parishad and Upazila Parishad polls accounting for the bulk of the expenditure. Final decisions regarding exact voting dates will be finalized during an upcoming EC meeting in late September or early October.
