Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in New York, USA, on Sunday (local time) to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), with enthusiastic receptions organized by Bangladeshi expatriates and BNP leaders and activists.
Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony told BSS that a Turkish Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and his entourage landed at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport at 6:20 pm (New York time) after a stopover in Istanbul. He was received at the airport by Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, Irene Zubaida Khan, and US Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam before being escorted to the Hyatt Grand Central New York. Jackson Heights and airport routes were decorated with banners and festoons as crowds gathered to welcome him.
The Prime Minister’s hectic schedule begins on September 22 with a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, followed by the opening session of the 81st UNGA. He is slated to hold high-profile bilateral meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and various UN and global tech leaders, alongside attending a reception hosted by the US President.
On September 23, he will attend a high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis, participate in discussions on climate action, and meet Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. A meeting with Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson and a related signing ceremony are also scheduled.
On September 24, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will deliver his much-anticipated address to the UNGA at around 5:30 pm (New York time), preceded by opening remarks at high-level meetings on sea-level rise and maternal healthcare. He will also hold bilateral talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and meet UN Chief António Guterres. His engagements will conclude on September 25 with a Wall Street breakfast meeting hosted by JPMorgan and a bilateral discussion with Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
